Does scale matter?
Many collectors enter the hobby at a young age collecting 1:64 scale cars. Hot Wheels and Matchbox are probably the most favored brands for these collectors. This scale is popular because the cars are usually less expensive and more readily available; making the 1:64 scale a great entry level. Some collectors will stay with this scale as they grow older, others move on to larger models.
Many manufacturers are producing beautifully detailed replicas for collectors to enjoy, in the 1:18 and 1:24 scales. Typically the larger scale cars will be better detailed than the smaller scales. The larger models may also have more features, such as opening doors, hoods and trunks, more finely detailed engines, functioning steering wheels and real rubber tires.
Whether the passion is for American muscle cars or exotic imports, there are diecast models for everyone, and in all sizes. If starting a new collection, ask yourself whether cost is more important than the finer details. If you are buying for someone you know has already started a collection, you may want to ask them what scale they are collecting. But, in the end, you can’t go wrong.
Don’t feel limited to choose one scale or another. Many collectors will often collect in more than one scale. More often than not, the excitement and passion is all about the make and model of a car, and not so much about the size of it.
